StarGate neboli Hvězdná Brána
Hvězdná brána je kruh, který má zhruba šest metrů v průměru. Je vyrobena z naquadahu, zvláštního prvku, který se nachází na některých planetách. Brána se zdá být imunní vůči efektu stárnutí. Skládá se ze dvou kruhů. Vnější kruh je stacionární s devíti zámky (chevrony), vnitřní kruh se otáčí a obsahuje 39 symbolů. 38 symbolů reprezentuje souhvězdí, 39. symbol je výchozí bod, který je pro každou bránu unikátní. Prvek, ze kterého je brána postavena, přímo absorbuje energii. Její vnitřní funkce tuto energii přemění a nabíjejí rezervoáry podobné kondenzátorům. Ale vnitřní kruh se začne otáčet pouze tehdy, když je rezerva energie dostatečná. Materiál brány je supravodič, absorbuje energii v mnoha formách - elektrickou, tepelnou, jadernou, solární. Fungování lze přirovnat k telefonu. Na zvláštním kruhovém zadávacím zařízení, tzv. DHD se zadá adresa. SGC místo něj používá supervýkonný počítač, protože DHD v Gíze nebylo údajně nalezeno. (Později se ukáže, že DHD v Gíze bylo. Dostalo se do rukou Němcům a po skončení 2. světové války ho zkonfiskovali Rusové.) Adresa se skládá ze sedmi symbolů. K určení polohy uvnitř trojrozměrného prostoru je potřeba šest symbolů a k určení směru je nutný sedmý symbol - výchozí bod. Při zadávání adresy se vnitřní kruh brány začne otáčet a zadávané symboly postupně zapadají do jednotlivých zámků, které se rozsvítí. Pokud zapadne všech sedm symbolů, což znamená, že brána na druhé straně je přístupná, dojde k výboji neutrinové energie a vytvoří se stabilní červí díra mezi oběma branami. Iluzi vody při aktivaci brány vytváří hranice červí díry tvořená kvantovými částicemi. Brána se dá otevřít nejen pomocí DHD nebo superpočítače, ale i manuálně, pokud je k dispozici dostatečný zdroj energie. Časové maximum, po které může být brána otevřena, je 38 minut, poté se červí díra zhroutí (pokud brána nedostává nějaký alternativní zdroj energie - viz A Matter of Time a Watergate). Při průchodu bránou dochází k molekulárnímu rozkladu hmoty, která se při výstupu druhou bránou opět rematerializuje do původní podoby. Hmota cestuje jednosměrně, vlnění (např. rádiové vlny, gama záření, gravitační vlny) může procházet obousměrně. Brána má schopnost využívat hustotu, molekulární strukturu a sílu působící na horizont událostí k určení toho, zda se jí někdo nebo něco opravdu pokouší projít. Hvězdné brány jsou rozesety na mnoha planetách v celé naší galaxii i mimo ni. Tvůrci hvězdných bran byli Antikové, jedna ze čtyř ras bývalé aliance. Dr. Daniel Jackson objevil během svého pobytu na Abydosu mapu obrovské sítě hvězdných bran, která se stala zdrojem adres pro výpravy SG týmů na jiné planety. Dlouho byla zdrojem jediným, a to až do okamžiku, kdy byly na planetě P3R-272 do O’Neillova mozku omylem nahrány z archivu Antiků všechny jejich znalosti. Jack díky těmto nově nabytým informacím zadal do počítače množství adres dalších bran, které se nevyskytovaly v abydoském „adresáři“ (viz The Fifth Race). Od té doby má SGC v databázi adresy hvězdných bran ze dvou zdrojů - z goa’uldské mapy na Abydosu a z archivu Antiků.
Pozemskou hvězdnou bránu nalezl roku 1928 profesor Langford v egyptské Gíze. Byla převezena do podzemní základny v USA, kde ji zkoumalo letectvo. V roce 1945 prezident Roosevelt nařídil experimenty s bránou. Vědci se tehdy domnívali, že brána je zbraň nebo by se tak dala použít. Experimenty vedl profesor Langford, objevitel brány. Američanům se podařilo již v roce 1945 bránu úspěšně aktivovat a jeden z členů výzkumného týmu, dr. Ernest Littlefield, prošel bránou na planetu, která byla později označena jako P3X-972. O 50 let později, když Pentagon odtajňoval staré archivní materiály, se dr. Jackson dozvěděl o pokusech ze 40. let. Tým SG-1 se vydal na zmiňovanou planetu a přivedl dr. Littlefielda zpět na Zemi (viz The Torment of Tantalus). Po neúspěchu ze 40. let, kdy bylo ztraceno spojení s dr. Littlefieldem, byl program ukončen a znovu obnoven až v 90. letech díky Catherine Langfordové, dceři prof. Langforda. Jakmile se s pomocí dr. Jacksona podařilo úspěšně aktivovat bránu a Jackson objevil abydoský adresář, celý projekt se rozjel naplno.
Hvězdná brána je umístěna na základně SGC v dolních patrech podzemního komplexu v hoře Cheyenne v Coloradu. Samotná brána se nachází v posledním, 28. podlaží. Aby se zabránilo průniku nezvaných návštěvníků, chrání pozemskou bránu iris. Je to ochranný štít vyrobený z čistého titanu. Iris je umístěna tři mikrometry od hranice červí díry, což účinně zabraňuje tomu, aby se hmota dokázala reintegrovat. Pro případ selhání iris je v komplexu bezpečnostní zařízení, které by se odpálilo a zničilo celou horu, ve které je komplex umístěn. Když byla iris zničena v epizodě A Matter of Time, kdy ji gravitace černé díry vtáhla bránou na planetu P3W-451, byla nainstalována nová iris obohacená triniem. Iris se otevře pouze v případě, že tým, který je na misi mimo Zemi, vyšle ze speciálního vysílače, tzv. GDO svůj kód (např. kód týmu SG-1 je 7062957 0282002). Iris byla nainstalována po vpádu Apophise na Zemi (viz Children of the Gods I).
V průběhu seriálu se ukáže, že na Zemi jsou dvě brány. Druhá brána byla náhodou objevena v Antarktidě, padesát mil jihozápadně od letecké základny McMurdo (viz Solitudes). Tato brána byla převezena do Nellisu do zařízení v Groom Lake (tzv. Oblast 51) v Nevadské poušti, kam jsou posílány všechny technologie, které SG týmy přinesou na Zemi. Brána měla být pod zámkem, ale záhadně se ztratila a byla po nějakou dobu používána agenty NID vedenými plukovníkem Maybournem (viz Touchstone). Nakonec byla za přispění SG-1 a generála Hammonda převezena zpět. První brána skončila na dně oceánu, když ji tým SG-1 přenesl na palubu Thorovy lodi Biliskner zamořenou replikátory, aby mohl uprchnout na jinou planetu. Loď se pak zřítila a dopadla na dno Pacifiku (viz Nemesis). Od té doby SGC používá antarktickou bránu, která byla na základnu převezena z Oblasti 51. První, egyptská brána se dostala do rukou Rusů, kteří rozjeli v tajném komplexu na Sibiři vlastní program Stargate. Ten však fungoval pouhých 37 dní, kdy bylo prozkoumáno sedm planet, než došlo k nehodě (viz Watergate).
Goa’uldi, Jaffové a Abydosané říkají hvězdné bráně chaapa´ai. Pro další národy na různých planetách je to zase kamenný kruh, průchod, velký kruh stojící vody, cirk kakona (kruh strastí) atd.
